We use the EnrollRI system, made by the RI Department of Education. This website lets families find, compare, and apply to charter schools all in one place.

Important Dates 

– The application is open now.

– It closes at 5:00 PM on Thursday, March 14th, 2024.

– The lottery will take place on Monday, April 1, 2024.

– Applications sent in after March 14 will go on the waiting list. 

When you apply, please choose one of these:

– Highlander Elementary Charter School – Grades Pre-K to 6

– Highlander Secondary Charter School – Grades 7 to 12 

You will need: 

– A working cell phone number

– An email address 

If you do not have an email, you can make one for free with Google.

If your child is already on Highlander’s waiting list for 2023-2024, you must submit a new application for 2024-2025. Waiting lists do not carry over each year. 

By law, Highlander admits students by lottery. 

– 75% of seats go to students who live in Providence.

– 25% go to students from other Rhode Island cities. 

– The lottery happens in the first week of March.

– All families get results by mail. 

You will receive an acceptance letter and a Confirmation Form in the mail. You must return the form within 15 business days (about 3 weeks.) 

You must also send:

– Your child’s brith certificate

– Proof of address (like a recent utility bill)

– Release of school records form

– School records from your child’s current school

– Special education records (if your child has an IEP or 504 plan) 

If we don’t hear from you by the deadline, we’ll try to contact you. If we can’t reach you, your child’s spot may go to another student. If you’ll be away during this time, call us to make other plans. 

– Pre-K: Child must be 4 years old by September 1

– Kindergarten: Child must be 5 years old by September 1

We give priority to students who already have a brother or sister at Highlander. “Siblings” means children who share the same parent or guardian and live in the same home. 

If there’s no space, siblings will be first on the waiting list.
